Different Rooms Need Different Types Of Hospital Furniture

Aug 7, 2011

It is fair to say that hospitals are allvery different to each other. Indeed, they all have the same purpose, which is to care for and deal with patients, but each hospital will have its own style. With this in mind, it is no surprise that each hospital needs its own hospital furniture.
Of course, you cant just purchase a standard chair and expect that to fit inevery room in the hospital. For example, A&E will need different types of furniturecompared to the patient rooms. This is not so much based on design purposes butmore on the function of the chair. In the A&E department you might expectto see small chairs with low backs, and lots of them! However, when in thepatient room you will be aware that the patient in question needs to ensure heor she has a very comfortable chair to sit on when up and out of bed, and thiswill more often than not be high-backed with deep upholstered cushionedseating. This is important so the patient doesnt hurt himself when getting inand out of the chair.
Hospitals have to be very careful about what they have as their furniturechoices. Many choose to go down the corporate, thematic route and have everyroom with the same colour scheme. This is often the case with small, privatehospitals that will adopt a certain theme and introduce this around thehospital. In NHS hospitals in the UK then you wont expect to see the samefurniture in every one. Some might have been updated whereas others might stillbe in need of a bit of a redesign and therefore the furniture choices simplycannot be the same throughout the UK.
In terms of the rooms though, there are three main areas in a hospital: theemergency rooms, the operating theatres and the patient bedrooms. These willall have different furniture in them to cater for their function. For example,in the operating theatre there wont be any comfy high-backed chairs - in fact, you might be lucky to find a chair at all. There will be the essentials inthere and one of those is of course the operating table.
Hospital furniture comes in all shapes and sizes and has different uses, butthe general consensus is to buy furniture that meets the infection controlcriteria. This will mean minimising the fussy additions and focusing onwipe-clean surfaces that can be cleaned quickly and easily and in turn preventinfection.
